When to call us — and when to call 911
This general guide applies after most oral-surgery procedures. Your procedure page and written instructions add specifics.
Usually expected
- Some oozing or blood-tinged saliva
- Swelling and bruising near the surgical site
- Discomfort managed with the medications you were directed to use
- Jaw stiffness and tiredness
Call our office if
- Bleeding that does not slow with steady pressure as directed
- Pain that increases instead of easing as you follow your instructions
- Fever, or increasing swelling, warmth, or discharge at the site
- You cannot keep fluids or directed medications down
- Anything in your written instructions you cannot follow or do not understand
Call 911 or go to the ER if
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Rapidly spreading swelling of the face or neck
- High fever with facial swelling
