The hours and days leading up to your oral surgery appointment require careful attention to specific guidelines designed to ensure your safety and optimize your sedation experience.

Essential Pre-Procedure Instructions for Safe Sedation
Creating a successful sedation experience starts with understanding and following specific pre-procedure requirements. Schedule your procedure for a day when you can dedicate the entire day to rest and recovery. Avoid scheduling any work commitments or important decision-making activities for the day of your procedure and the following day, as sedation medications can affect your judgment for up to 24 hours.
Inform our office immediately if you develop any signs of illness in the days leading up to your procedure. Cold symptoms, fever, or digestive upset can interfere with sedation safety and may require rescheduling your appointment. Additionally, provide our team with a complete list of all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you’re currently taking, as some substances can interact with sedation medications.
Arrange to have a responsible adult accompany you to your appointment. This person must be prepared to stay in our Warren office throughout your entire procedure and drive you home afterward. Public transportation, rideshare services, or driving yourself are not acceptable alternatives on the day of sedation.
What to Bring and What to Leave at Home
Your day-of-procedure preparation includes careful consideration of what items to bring and what to leave behind. Arrive wearing loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up for IV access if needed. Avoid tight-fitting garments, especially around your neck and chest area.
Remove all jewelry, including rings, earrings, necklaces, and body piercings before arriving at our office. These items can interfere with monitoring equipment and pose safety risks during your procedure. Leave valuable items at home, as you’ll need to store personal belongings in our recovery area.
Contact lenses must be removed before sedation, so bring your glasses if needed for clear vision during discharge instructions. If you wear dentures or removable dental appliances, you’ll need to remove these items before your procedure begins. Bring a list of your current medications and any post-operative instructions you may have received during your consultation.
Critical Eating and Drinking Guidelines
Fasting requirements represent one of the most important aspects of sedation preparation. These guidelines exist to prevent serious complications during your procedure, so strict adherence is essential for your safety.
Stop eating all solid foods at least eight hours before your scheduled appointment time. This includes candy, gum, mints, and any food items regardless of size. Even small amounts of food in your stomach can create dangerous complications during sedation.
Cease all liquid intake, including water, coffee, juice, and other beverages, at least eight hours before your procedure. Some patients mistakenly believe that clear liquids are acceptable closer to their appointment time, but this is not the case. All liquids must be avoided during the fasting period.
Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours before your sedation appointment. Alcohol can interact dangerously with sedation medications and increase your risk of complications. If you take essential medications that must be continued up to your procedure day, consult with our team about the appropriate timing and whether these can be taken with minimal water.
Transportation and Support Arrangements
Reliable transportation arrangements are mandatory for sedation procedures and cannot be compromised. Your designated driver must be a responsible adult who can remain at our facility throughout your procedure and provide safe transportation home.
Confirm your driver’s availability well in advance of your appointment. Last-minute transportation changes can result in procedure delays or cancellation. Your driver should plan to arrive at our Warren office at your scheduled appointment time and be prepared to wait during your entire procedure and initial recovery period.
Brief your designated driver about their responsibilities, which include listening to your discharge instructions, helping you follow post-operative care guidelines, and monitoring your condition during the first few hours of recovery. Consider arranging for additional support at home during your recovery period, as having someone available to help with meal preparation and medication reminders can significantly improve your recovery experience.
