Understanding Wisdom Teeth Removal: Procedure and Recovery

Wisdom teeth removal is a common oral surgery procedure among teens and young adults because it helps them avoid serious dental health issues later in life. Understanding the procedure and recovery can alleviate any fear surrounding the straightforward surgery, which is minimally painful.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

A wisdom tooth extraction begins with dental imaging to determine the position and condition of the wisdom teeth. Depending on the complexity of the extraction, your oral surgeon administers local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. During the extraction, the surgeon makes an incision in the gum tissue, removes any bone blocking access to the tooth root, and extracts the tooth.

Sometimes, the tooth must be divided into sections for easier removal. After the tooth is extracted, the incision is stitched, and gauze is placed over the extraction site to control bleeding. Post-operative care includes following specific instructions on diet, oral hygiene, and pain management to promote healing and minimize complications such as infection or dry socket.

Recovery Timeline After Wisdom Tooth Removal

We provide our patients with detailed post-op instructions to follow when they return home after surgery. Please follow these to ensure a safe and complete recovery. While everyone heals at a different rate, the typical timeline for recovery is as follows:

  • Mild bruising on cheeks
  • A sore, stiff jaw
  • Weird taste in my mouth
  • Numbness or tingling in the mouth, cheeks, or face

Days 2-4

  • Swelling and bruising in cheeks may increase

  • You can slowly return to daily activities and work.

Days 5-14

  • Swelling, pain, and bruising subside
